Have you ever had a compulsion to go for that extra piece of cake -- or pie -- or candy?
You know, it’s that leftover in the refrigerator -- if you listen, you can hear it calling your name.
Personally, I know I hear that little voice more often than I care to admit. My cravings typically come in the evening, after I've relaxed and am getting ready to watch my favorite TV show.
But frankly, the urge to over-indulge might come at anytime of the day.
When it happens, try this:
Count to ten very slowly and then ask yourself...
- “Do I need that extra piece of cake?”
- “Is there something else that might be affecting me to cause my hunger?”
Then, refocus on something else ...
- Pray or meditate to take your mind off food and put it back on something positive
- Instead of the cake, grab a healthy snack and eat it in moderation
- Focus on your present situation and things around you and enjoy them in that moment
- Engage in one of your hobbies (if you’re musically and/or artistically inclined then play your instrument of choice; draw/paint something around you; work on needlepoint or some type of craft-making)
- Select your favorite recording artist and play a favorite CD and sing along (whether you think you can sing or not)
- Grab a glass of water or your favorite diet drink (cola, decaf coffee, herbal tea) since oftentimes the liquid may satisfy your hunger
- Call a friend or family member to catch up
- Pick up and read a favorite novel or a new one that appeals to you
- Engage in your exercise of choice
Well, there you have it… 10 ways to quiet the craving for that leftover that's calling to you.
If you make a 21-day commitment to exchange an unhealthy eating habit for a healthy one you’ll be successful in the long run.
